Despite these strengths, the precinct's public realm was increasingly dominated by vehicle movement, limiting opportunities for people to gather, linger and enjoy the village environment.

As part of Brisbane City Council's Village Precinct Projects program, the revitalisation sought to rebalance the relationship between people and traffic, transforming the precinct into a more welcoming and pedestrian-focused destination. A key part of the project involved reallocating road space to significantly expand footpaths, creating new opportunities for outdoor dining, informal gathering and everyday community life.

Fennec Studio's team was the Principal Consultant and led the landscape and public realm design, helping shape a cohesive streetscape experience that prioritises comfort, accessibility and local character. New planting, seating and public realm improvements work together to create a high-amenity environment that supports local businesses while encouraging people to spend more time within the village.

At the heart of the project is a custom-designed bus shelter that draws inspiration from Brisbane's suburban architectural heritage. Designed as both a transport facility and community landmark, the shelter provides a contemporary interpretation of familiar local forms while contributing to the precinct's unique identity.

The completed project demonstrates how thoughtful public realm investment can strengthen the character of an established neighbourhood. By giving space back to people, the revitalisation has helped transform West Ashgrove Village into a more vibrant, connected and welcoming place for the local community.
