As part of Brisbane Airport's centenary celebrations, the project sought to create a new destination that honours this long-standing community while inspiring the next generation of aviation enthusiasts.

Fennec Studio developed the landscape and public realm design for the new viewing area, transforming a simple observation point into a purpose-designed experience. The design process was informed by extensive research into aircraft movements, runway operations, seasonal sun angles and photographer preferences to ensure visitors could enjoy optimal viewing opportunities throughout the day and across the year.

Working closely with Brisbane Airport, the design team explored components from a decommissioned Fokker F28 aircraft before selecting the tail section as the defining feature of the precinct. Celebrating Queensland's aviation history, the restored aircraft element creates a memorable landmark and focal point for visitors arriving at the site.

Surrounding spaces were carefully arranged to maximise views of aircraft taxiing, departing and arriving, while providing comfortable areas for people to gather, learn and share their passion for aviation. Seating, shelter and viewing locations were strategically positioned to respond to both visitor experience and operational airport conditions.

The completed project demonstrates how thoughtful design can elevate a simple piece of infrastructure into a meaningful community destination. More than a viewing area, it is a place where people connect through a shared fascination with flight and where future generations can experience the excitement and wonder of aviation up close.
